Helpful At Home Video Tips - March 16, 2020
Our world is rapidly changing and we are all figuring out our new normal. Many companies and firms are still hiring but obviously not conducting in-person interviews. In addition to phone calls and skype, many are conducting remote video interviews. Not everyone is familiar with how that works - here are some tips I hope are helpful.
- Find a quiet, private, well-lit place, free from possible interruptions from other people, pets or noises. Position your webcam so that you have a neutral background.
- Check that your computers audio is working. An internet connection with bandwidth speed of at least 1 megabits per second. A laptop or desktop computer with a webcam is the best. In some cases, a tablet or smartphone may also be an option.
- Dress professionally, just like you would for an in-person interview. Soft colors are best. If you wear glasses, adjust the lighting in the room to reduce glare.
- Have a pen, notepad and copy of your resume on your desk. STAY engaged in the interview - use hand gestures when appropriate and stay engaged while listening by nodding and smiling when appropriate. Eye contact is equally as important in a video interview as it is in a personal one. The best way to do this is to avoid the instinct to look directly at your interviewer while answering a question - when answering, direct your gaze at the webcam. Doing this is more likely to align with the interviewers eyes on the other end. When you are listening, look at the screen. Make sure your posture is good.
- If you are not used to the technology, its very useful to practice with family members or friends. Ask for candid feedback. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel.
If something goes wrong:
Prior to the start of the interview, ask the interviewer for their phone number you can call if the audio or video stops working. That way you can call if something happens and either continue the interview by phone or reschedule.
